I once found myself staring out into a vast expanse of small and delicate wildflowers. Many wildflowers grow in small batches on a country roadside, not unlike a tiny, thriving village. But I remember this rolling field of blossoms in solitary pink, nothing less than an entire metropolis.

You probably know how a metropolis can feel. So many people drawn to the same place for strikingly similar reasons, which you’d think would foster a sense of warm familiarity amongst a city of strangers—but no, instead, so many of them feel just all so alone. 

There was this particular flower, alone. But he could feel another one, out there in the distance. She was a memory for all he could tell, and he a memory of hers; they merely floated in and out of each others’ lives. And memories fade. “Sometimes the spark dies first,” they’d think, “and slowly the flame is sure to follow.” But they dream together.

These dreams, with time, whisper past—imagine an ephemeral breath stoking soft embers and hopeful kindling. Somewhere inside our protagonists come to know that it's an impossible, tiring task to keep these breaths bigger and fuller. But in their moments together it’s clear that it's the tiring that's worth it, not the flame.
